Fleeing driver taken into custody in downtown Olympia

A 27-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of eluding police after a 30-minute pursuit that started in the Lacey area and ended in downtown Olympia, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

The man also faces possible charges for driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

According to Lt. Ray Brady:

Just after midnight, a Sheriff’s Office deputy was in the 7000 block of Martin Way East when the deputy heard and saw two Hondas racing westbound. One driver pulled over, but the other kept going, eventually racing down southbound I-5 and exiting the freeway at Sleater-Kinney Road.

The driver headed back to Pacific Avenue and west to Olympia. Olympia police put down spike strips in the area, but the driver kept going until he bailed out of his vehicle at Columbia Street and State Avenue downtown.

Police set up a perimeter in the area, and were prepared to use a K9 to track the suspect, but the man was ultimately found walking down Capitol Way by a Sheriff’s Office sergeant, Brady said.

This is the third pursuit in almost as many days for local law enforcement.

The Sheriff’s Office chased a truck down I-5 Saturday night, and there was a Washington State Patrol pursuit Sunday morning that resulted in a Honda striking another vehicle at Exit 109.
