An insurance agent buys a building, a business looks for a storefront, a closure in Lacey
For nine years, State Farm agent Kevin Hayward leased about 1,000 square feet of space for his business near Fred Meyer in Lacey.
But for his 10th year of business, Hayward decided to buy his own building in Lacey, which provides twice as much space for him and his six employees.
Hayward made an offer on the building at 4440 Pacific Ave. SE over the summer and the transaction closed in November. The space was renovated and Hayward and his team moved in late March.
“This is part of my retirement plan,” he said, adding that he can sell or rent the building to another State Farm agent or a new business.
Just like owning a house, though, once you become the owner of a commercial space, the cost of repairs falls to the person who pays the mortgage. That meant Hayward had to replace the HVAC system for his building.
The new location has a driveway that fronts Pacific Avenue and parking behind the building.
Other business happenings
Adam’s Bagels in Olympia is looking to open its own storefront, according to the fundraising site gofundme. Owner Adam Dealan-de seeks to raise $3,000 to invest in equipment for the business.
The business had looked at opening at New Traditions Cafe and Fair Trade in downtown Olympia, but that plan fell through, said co-owner Jody Mackey.
Although Dealan-de could not be reached, the Adam’s Bagels website sheds light on his journey to making bagels.
Twenty-five years ago, the owner went to work at a coffee shop in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver, B.C., and discovered a nearby bagel shop and Montreal-style bagels.
“The desire for those unforgettable bagels never left me, and the idea of offering a real bagel experience in my community has always been in the back of my mind,” the website reads.
Although he doesn’t have a storefront yet, he is making and selling bagels through his website for pickup and delivery.
“We bake in the tradition of Montreal-style bagels; handmade and hand-rolled, boiled in honey water and baked to a crisp finish. But with our own unique take, using coconut oil and our legendary Olympia artesian water.”
Meanwhile, in Lacey, a check of Paco’s Tacos shows that the business at 4520 Lacey Blvd. has closed. The former owner also owns Oskar’s German and European Deli in Lacey, near Fred Meyer. A check of that business shows that it’s still open.
