Port of Olympia executive director gets raise, will make $191,227 in 2022
The Port of Olympia commission approved a raise for Executive Director Sam Gibboney during its regular meeting on Monday, but if you weren’t paying attention you probably missed it.
That’s because commissioners spent all of two minutes on the topic.
A motion was made by Commissioner Joe Downing, followed by a 2-1 vote in favor of the pay bump. Commissioners Downing and Bill McGregor voted in favor of the increase while Commissioner E.J. Zita did not.
There also was no discussion. Downing explained there would be no discussion, citing paragraph 4 of Washington statute 42.23.070, which says the following:
“No municipal officer may disclose confidential information gained by reason of the officer’s position, nor may the officer otherwise use such information for his or her personal gain or benefit,” the statute reads.
Gibboney received a 3 percent increase to her pay and will earn $191,227 in 2022. She also received an additional week of vacation, spokeswoman Jennie Foglia-Jones said.
Gibboney replaced former director, Ed Galligan, in 2019 after he resigned in spring 2018 following a dozen years at the helm.
Gibboney came to the port from the Port of Port Townsend where she was executive director for two and a half years. Before that she worked for San Juan County in a variety of roles, including as its director of community development, The Olympian reported.
Gibboney’s starting salary at the port in 2019 was $175,000.
One task for Gibboney in the new year: finding a new marine terminal director. Former director Len Faucher accepted a new job and left the port at the end of November.
