What’s that giant thing moored at the Port of Olympia marine terminal?

A massive crane barge is docked at the Port of Olympia marine terminal, according to the port and a check of the property.

It’s called the Pacific Titan. It arrived Friday morning, and it’s here for about two weeks to undergo maintenance before it heads north to the Seattle area, port spokesman Taber Lee said Monday.

The giant crane barge will take advantage of the port’s mobile crane for that maintenance work, Lee said.

What kind of maintenance work? Lee said the crane barge needed to be adjusted to get through the Panama Canal and now those adjustments need to be reset with the help of the port’s crane.

The Pacific Titan currently is tied up at Berth 3 on the marine terminal so that another ship, expected soon, can unload paper pulp products from Brazil at Berth 1, Lee said.

Once that delivery is complete and the ship leaves, the crane barge is expected to be moved into Berth 1, which is closer to the Port Plaza, a waterfront gathering spot for the public.

Residents curious about the barge should see it well from there, Lee said.

The crane barge is ultimately headed to a permanent mooring spot near Alki Beach in the Seattle area, he said.

The crane is operated by a business called Stor Kran.

Here’s what the Stor Kran website says about the Pacific Titan:

“The Pacific Titan is one of the world’s most powerful floating cranes, offering unmatched lifting capacity and proven performance on landmark projects,” the site reads. “Purpose-built for the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge and later the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York, it now serves as a global heavy-lift solution available through Stor Kran Co.

“With over 2,000 tons of lifting capacity and a history of success on complex infrastructure builds, the Pacific Titan is engineered to move the impossible.”

In addition to the lifting capacity, the crane has a 330-foot boom.

Lee added that the crane barge contains three miles of cabling.
