Baby dies after rollover crash. Olympia man charged with vehicular homicide
A three-month-old Yakima girl was pronounced dead on Sunday at Harborview Medical Center, three weeks after a rollover crash that killed a woman and left an Olympia man charged with vehicular homicide.
The Olympian reported that at about 11:20 p.m. on Oct. 26, a 30-year-old Olympia man was driving north on state Route 821 at the Yakima/Kittitas county line in central Washington with two passengers: a 33-year-old Yakima woman and the baby.
Troopers said the Olympia man, Chance M. Piccin, was driving at a “high rate of speed,” lost control of his vehicle and it rolled multiple times before coming to a stop on its wheels. Two occupants were ejected from the vehicle.
The Yakima woman died at the scene and has been identified as Courtney A. Bedell. The baby was injured and taken to Kittitas Valley Healthcare in Ellensburg. According to a Nov. 16 news release from the Washington State Patrol, the girl was pronounced dead by Harborview Medical Center staff. The release says she was not wearing a seatbelt. Officials haven’t released her name.
Piccin was not injured, according to the State Patrol, and he was booked into Kittitas County Jail. Court records show prosecutors charged him with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and driving under the influence. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment, and the court set his bail at $300,000.
The Olympian was not immediately able to reach an attorney representing Piccin on Monday.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story misstated the age of the child. She was 3 months old.
