Suspect in Deschutes Parkway shooting arrested after high-speed chase through Olympia

Police were dispatched to reports of a vehicle traveling at least 100 mph on Highway 101 North toward Mud Bay Road on Thursday afternoon, according to the Olympia Police Department.

The person driving the vehicle was believed to be the suspect in a shooting that occurred on Wednesday near Capitol Lake on Deschutes Parkway. Olympia police lost the vehicle on State Road 8 near Ranch House BBQ, where it was seen heading toward McCleary. Grays Harbor County officers were able to stop the vehicle further on State Road 8 near Fairgrounds Road in Elma.

Police waited for the SWAT Team and a hostage negotiator to arrive, and Highway 8 was shut down for a period of time. Nobody else was in the car with the suspect.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office verified the suspect was arrested by Washington State Patrol for unlawful possession of a firearm, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree assault.

The shooting occurred just before 12:30 p.m. near the encampment along the parkway on Wednesday, Washington State Patrol trooper Darren Wright told The Olympian. First responders transported one man with non-life threatening injuries to an area hospital soon after the shooting, Wright said.

This investigation is ongoing.
