Boston Street to close as part of oil spill cleanup in Tumwater

Boston Street Southwest in Tumwater will be closed over the weekend as crews continue to clean up after an oil spill at the former Olympia Brewing Co. property last month.

The closure is scheduled from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Saturday between Custer Way Southwest and Deschutes Parkway Southwest.

On Feb. 25, vandals damaged a transformer on Boston Street while trying to steal copper wire. The transformer held 677 gallons of oil, some of which spilled into the Deschutes River and got into Capitol Lake.

This weekend, a private contractor will replace stormwater basins and pipes that were damaged. Signs will direct drivers around the closure via Capitol Boulevard Southeast, E Street Southwest and Deschutes Parkway. Flaggers will be on site to assist drivers.

Crews previously removed the sidewalk and part of the road on Boston Street to test the soil for harmful chemicals found in the oil.
