One person is dead after crashing into a work zone on southbound Interstate 5 in Lacey near Carpenter Road.

Trooper John Dattilo told The Olympian Washington State Patrol received reports of an erratically driven vehicle early this morning. He said the vehicle then drove into an attenuator truck and then hit an excavator on site.

The State Patrol is not releasing information about the driver until next of kin are notified.

The crash, which took place at about 5 a.m., caused major delays on southbound I-5. The highway’s right lane was closed as Washington State Department of Transportation officials work to complete their investigation. Access to Marvin Road was limited.

In a 7:36 a.m. tweet, WSDOT Tacoma said all lanes of southbound I-5 in Lacey were not expected to reopen until about 10 a.m., as crews needed to repair and remove damaged equipment from the scene.

Scheduled roadwork is expected to slow traffic on both directions of I-5 in Olympia this weekend.
