Letters to the editor for March 25
Disrespect in Congress
Diana Williams’s March 6 letter discussed the President using such terms as disrespect, dishonor, disloyal, petty, vindictive. Since Ms. Williams set the standard, I submit other names should be included.
The Speaker of the House, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, was disrespectful of the Office of the President when she tore up Trump’s State of the Union message in a fit of rage on national TV. A State of the Union is a Constitutional requirement; she dishonored this requirement by a petty and vindictive action.
The Senate Minority Leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer, was disrespectful of the U.S. Supreme Court and specifically two of the Justices, which he named on national TV. He was disloyal to the Constitution to threaten these Justices simply because he had a difference of opinion. Having a difference of opinion is one thing; to shout threats is not only dangerous but petty and vindictive.
Since Ms. Williams believes people in high office should honor their office and their high political standing, I’m certain we shall soon see a Letter to the Editor agreeing that Schumer and Pelosi were very disrespectful and dishonorable. Threatening members of the Supreme Court by name is wrong and Schumer should be held in contempt by the U. S. Senate.
We are not learning
So, we are once again victims of unintended consequences. I’m not even sure people realize that they are in fact victims. I am referring to the legalization of marijuana and the inevitable subsequent marketing and packaging of the myriad of smokables, edibles, drinkables, dabables, ad nauseum.
Don’t get me wrong. I am a customer. Walk into any pot shop and it is chock full of single-use plastic containers. Hundreds of individually packaged — in all the fancy colors and all the pertinent fine print — prerolled marijuana cigarettes, sitting eyecatchingly behind glass counters and cupboards. Now multiply that by all the retail licenses there are in the state.
This is happening at a time when we are just coming to understand how damaging and insidious plastic really is. We are trying to ban single-use plastic straws for cryin’ out loud. I know it’s a start, but dang, one step forward and 10 miles back.
Yes, I know about the free market and it’s all legal, but somewhere, sometime it’s going to have to end. This is the only planet we have at the moment. Our children’s children’s children would like to be able to enjoy it. I know I have.
