All lanes of southbound I-5 have reopened, WSDOT says
All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 at Mounts Road have reopened after crews were able to complete repairs following Monday’s deadly train derailment ahead of schedule, according to transportation officials.
Two lanes reopened at 5 p.m. Wednesday after crews determined concrete on the freeway was not significantly damaged when the train cars and engine fell onto it. The third lane reopened Wednesday night.
The Mounts Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 has also reopened. That means there are no remaining road closures related to the train derailment.
The I-5 closure had forced drivers onto long detours as they tried to go south between Tacoma and Olympia.
